Scientific Writing Made Easy

Writing is an integral part of a PhD program. It is important for academicians to express their work in clear words. At some point we all would face difficulty in writing a clear and elegant article / paper. One can master this art by understanding the principles and process of good writing.

In order to help the research scholars, Research department organized a workshop and webinar on “SCIENTIFIC WRITING MADE EASY” on 28th January 2016.

The workshop focused on writing in the sciences, the principles of good writing that can be applied in all disciplines. This workshop facilitated and encouraged participants to practice--by writing in a journal, working on essays or papers, and editing others' work. The course framework included – lectures, quiz, peer review, interactive sessions. A participation certificate was given at the end of the workshop.

The program idea was coined by Dr.Rama Vaidyanathan and supported by Dr.Thirunavakkuarasu. The team gathered together and drafted a blue print of the complete program. Information about the program was communicated to all the research scholars via Email with subsequent follow up’s. An online registration form was created and shared. The team met frequently to understand the progress. Apart from registration follow ups, the team worked on the certificate design, poster printing, feedback form, spot registration forms, tea and food arrangements. Greater emphasis was given on the content of the presentation. The mock presentation was conducted the previous day at the venue to check the quality of content and infrastructure at the seminar hall.

There was an overwhelming response with high interest levels to participate in the program. Research scholars across various streams confirmed their attendance via online as well as in person.

What went right?

The topic was apt and relevant to the chosen audience and presented for the first time in the university. Online registration form made the process easy. The follow up mails was like a reminder to register as well as to participate. Regular follow up and support by Dr.RamaVaidyanathan led to smooth arrangements. Presence of Dr.Thirunavukkarasu throughout the program, brought in the seriousness and his timely feedback to the presenters was highly useful.

What could have done better?

The seminar hall to be equipped with power back up. There was only a 10 minute of power break down and hence it did not affect this event much. The examples used by the presenters were mostly from the medical field, the same could have been fine tuned to the audience requirements.
